I have noticed a rise in mischievous behavior on the net but I just thought the server being down was just the curse of "when Sandman leaves the country, things will happen beyond his control" sort of luck..

Sorry about the recent down time these past couple of weeks.  I have been having trouble with a ageing UPS unit lately and getting it to reset required power cycling it several times.  But yesterday it finally failed for good and I had to replace it.  So now, the server is being protected by a brand new APC Back-UPS XS 900 battery backup.

No, the crashing of the game servers was not power related.  But the complete shutdown of the server computer because of a failed battery in the battery backup was.
